DR. HO FENG-SHAN

Chinese

(1901-1997)

First Secretary at the Chinese embassy in Vienna and Consul-General after Austria was annexed to Nazi Germany, was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations on August 7, 2000. Ho aided hundreds, if not thousands, of Austrian Jews to flee the country after the 1938 Anschluß (the annexation of Austria). He issued visas that enabled Jews to immigrate and produce proof of immigration, which was the condition for releasing male Jews from concentration camps where they had been incarcerated after the Kristallnacht pogrom. Ho persisted and continued to issue visas even after his superior ordered him to restrict the number of visas.
