MONSIGNOR GENNARO VEROLINO

Budapest

(1906-2005)

NUNCIO ANGELO ROTTA

Budapest

(1872-1965)

Verolino, Secretary of the Apostolic Nuncio in Budapest, was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations on April 30, 2007, for his role in saving Jews of Budapest. In 1944, when Nazi Germany occupied Hungary, Nuncio Angelo Rotta (recognized as Righteous Among the Nations on July 16, 1997) was 72 years old, and Verolino did all the fieldwork of the Nunciature. He distributed protective letters, ensured the safety and provisioning of the safe houses under Vatican protection, as well as followed the death marches to the Austrian border and attempted to remove Jews from the columns. After the rise to power of the Hungarian Arrow Cross party, Verolino fearlessly confronted the Fascist gangs to protect Jews.
