ALBERT EMILE ROUTIER

Turkey

(1902-1977)

Honorary Consul of Turkey in Lyon, France, was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations on November 1, 2016. Despite Turkey’s reluctance to protect Jews of Turkish origin, Routier did everything possible to help Turkish Jews to be exempted from persecution and deportation. In at least one case he falsified information and issued false translations of documents for Algerian-born Rabbi Assouline, his wife, Sarah Semmelmann, and her relatives. Although none of them had any connection to Turkey, Routier declared them to be Muslims and registered them with false Turkish names. The false documents enabled the family to survive in France until the end of the war.
