VALDEMAR LANGLET

Sweden

(1872-1960)

Cultural attaché at the Swedish Legation in Budapest, was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations with his wife, Nina, on February 16, 1965, for extensive efforts to save Hungarian Jews. Langlet, who was appointed the Swedish Red Cross delegate in Budapest, issued protective letters and established orphanages, hospitals, and safe houses for Jews. After the rise of the Fascist Arrow Cross party, Langlet often confronted Arrow Cross militia who raided safe houses and arrested Jews. Building on his acquaintance with Hungarian officials and his knowledge of Hungarian, he negotiated with the regime’s leadership to protect his wards. During the siege of Budapest, the Langlets were arrested and brutally interrogated but finally released due to pressure from Swedish Minister Carl Danielsson.
