ÁNGEL SANZ BRIZ
Spain
(1910-1980)
First Secretary, and as of summer 1944 Chargé d’Affaires at the Spanish Legation in Budapest, was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations on October 18, 1966. Following the German occupation of Hungary in March 1944, Sanz Briz obtained permission to provide 200 Spanish identity documents to Jews of Spanish origin. He soon enlarged the number of recipients and provided life-saving documents to Jews with no Spanish connection. Sanz Briz cooperated with other diplomats of neutral countries, negotiated with the Hungarian authorities, and accommodated Jews in buildings under Spanish protection.
